ASET Air Affair East 2007 - Part 2

The 2007 Air Affair East, Part 2 as reported by Donn Shanteau.

Saturday Morning (4/28/07)…

Jason Doll chose to share his method of rendering real-fire to his Saturday morning class. Explaining the hows and whys of flame shape and color can be difficult when addressing novice airbrush painters.

As they began painting, the students began to understand that those real-fire flames are harder to paint than they look. Jason was right on the mark with clear cut instruction and hands–on help for each attendee. Steve Driscoll, Bones and Pam Shanteau pitched in to help some of the students as well. Before long, Jason’s class gradually got the idea of how to build and shape their flames. Doll’s class proved that nothing beats in-person hands on tutoring.

Watch out Mike Lavalle! ☺ Another cadre of Flamers has been released on the streets.

Saturday mornings 2nd class offering featured Paul Quinn’s pinstripe artistry. Paul is an old hand in the industry and had much to offer the neophyte airbrush painters and pinheads. Subjects covered include, mixing your paints, brush care and maintenance and paint applications such as outlining flames and pulling straight lines.

Many details that really matter were explained by Paul, such as oiling and trimming the brush, types of brushes and why you would choose one over the other. Also covered were, restoring the spring in a damaged or dirty brush and the preferred paints and cleaning solvents. Paul put the students through the paces of pulling lines and following arcs, experimenting with different ways of holding the brush as you work along with any other method of applying paints with a pinstripe brush.

After another great lunch provided by ASET, Steve Driscoll explained portraiture methods to the class. He covered topics ranging from monochromatic renderings and painting with pearls and other types of specialty paints. Steve gave a comprehensive demonstration on color theory as it relates to mixing custom paint colors. Special attention was given to color values and their importance in portraiture.

The final Saturday session was taught by Pamela Shanteau. She introduced some non-traditional airbrushing and paint manipulation methods that have never been seen in an automotive painting seminar, until now. This very unique class focused not only on paint application, but on selective paint removal to render details. Removing pigment to create the desired effect is a fine art technique that has never been promoted as an automotive painting method. Pamela explained everything in detail.

Special tools used in conjunction with more standard airbrushing accessories, are able to render fantastic textures and color effects. These very techniques will be introduced to the general public in her soon to be released Automotive and Motorcycle Airbrushing 101 hardcover book, published by Iwata/Medea (see below).

The ASET students that attended the 1st Air Affair East are the first ever to get this information from the artist that developed the technique and adapted it to automotive custom painting.

In conclusion, The Air Affair east was a huge success, and while no blood was shed and nobody ended up in jail ☺, there were dozens of satisfied students and the artists all bonded in the spirit of co-operation and respect. The faculty of the College was thrilled to be the host venue and accommodated the program 100%. Hope to see you at the next one.
