Build Your Own Easel

We love free. And in this economy, who wouldn’t? In this case in particular, free is great - especially if it gets you back to the easel and painting. We found these plans to build a great looking and highly functional artist easel online - and you guessed it, the plans are free. They do required and little on your part; mostly materials, an investment in time, and some labor… but hey, it’s Labor Day, so what better time to get motivated and make something happen.
These are complete novice woodworking plans for building a fully-functional studio easel for less than $100 in materials using tools you’ll find in your basement or your friend’s garage. This easel is suitable for securing huge canvases and extends to accommodate any size canvas.
Even if you’ve never built anything with your hands, Benjamin guarantees you can build this. Get started by checking out the plans on Benjamin Grosser’s site, complete with…
• Plans - complete plans include a thorough materials list and assembly instructions.
• Resources - hardware, wood, tools… it’s all covered.
• Gallery - check out other easels built with these plans.
• FAQ section… Plans for a smaller easel? A wall-mount easel? Different wood, i.e. oak, birch, poplar, maple, etc.? Metric version of the plans? You get the idea. It’s all there.
…and did we mention it’s FREE? Why you ask? (and we knew you would). Read the “About the Author” page to learn a little about artist and composer Benjamin Grosser. He says… “I benefit daily from information that others have posted on the web for free. This includes information that helps me in my work (primarily technical computer-related information), my creative endeavors (painting, photography, music, etc.), my daily life (weather, home repair) and even my health. I would prefer to see this information stay free, and the only way to help ensure that is to do so with my own info.” He also tells us that he is very encouraged by correspondence from those who have built one or those who plan to. Pictures of finished easels are especially welcome.
So, there you go. A man after our own hearts.
Happy Labor Day to you all.
