The Ultimate Aero - A 250+ MPH Dream Car

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Didn’t get what you wanted for Christmas? When it comes to cars, you rarely do. Take, for example, this beautiful and rarely seen SSC Ultimate Aero (which I’m fairly certain was on my Christmas list). This is an amazing car that caught my eye from a hundred yards away, and drew me close like a moth to light. It was parked in front of one of our favorite toy stores - MotorCars of Las Vegas so I had to check out this rolling work of art up close. It didn’t take long - somewhere between its lines and its pedigree, the Ultimate Aero went on my short list of radical car favorites. After all, this car has most everything you could want in a dream car; beauty, style, speed and tons of carbon fiber. A high-tech masterpiece, the body and frame are constructed entirely of carbon fiber/composite/steel space frame. Weighing in with a dry weight of 2,750 lbs. makes this one strong and light machine. Aerodynamic too.

The Ultimate Aero is the fastest production car on the planet. Those are some serious bragging rights, so don’t believe us - check it out for yourself. It’s even received a Guiness Book of World Records award for achieving two-way times speed in excess of 256.15 MPH. So, until otherwise informed, we’re calling that good for the title of World’s Fastest Production Car.

QUICK SPECS*:
- 0-60 mph: 2.78 seconds
- 1/4 Mile: 9.90 seconds at 144 mph
- Top Speed: 257.41 MPH / Official Average: 256.15 MPH
- Skidpad: 1.05 g
- 0-100mph-0: 11.66
- 60mph-0 (braking): 103 feet

It’s as you would expect from a radical car builder like Shelby. Did we mention the SSC, as in SSC Ultimate Aero, stands for Shelby Super Cars? You can learn more about this Shelby Super Car at: MotorCars of Las Vegas website. These guys specialize in exotic, highline and luxury automobiles and are the exclusive North American dealer for the world’s fastest production car, the SSC Ultimate Aero. But if your tastes differ, they also showcase Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Rolls Royce, BMW, Mercedes and a plethora of other exotics - you get the idea.

Get used to this view unless you’re the one behind the wheel of this beast.

Doors up. As you would expect, it takes some effort to get into, but once your inside she fits like a glove. I’m 6′ and it fit me right anyway. Once you’re inside, you’ll get a great view of the carbon fiber dash and panels, mixed with custom Recaro seats and ultra-contemporary interior. And if you’ve got somewhere between $500k-600k, you can enjoy that view as often as you like.

Leading the pack, and in good company, the Ultimate Aero runs the hills with three beautiful Lamborghini locals, courtesy of the Ferrari Club of Las Vegas.

Well, that’s it for this one. For me, it’s off for a couple laps at the track… in my mind anyway :-) .

Anest Iwata LPH400 LVX

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Announcing the LPH400 LVX eXtreme basecoat spray gun from Anest Iwata.

Teaming up with our LPH400 LVB, the LPH400 LVX eXtreme basecoat technology was developed for use with 90-95% of basecoat colors and engineered to provide increased productivity in application for solvent or waterborne basecoats. While the LPH400 LVB remains the set-up for the most difficult or complex colors the LPH400 LVX handles all the middle range colors where productivity and speed is a must.

Extensive field-testing and painter evaluation reports prove that the LPH400 LVX is much faster than the competition and has an ultra smooth application with no technique change. Inlet pressures, spray distance and overlap are the same for the LPH400 LVX as a normal LPH400.

Hybrid metallic, regular metallic, xyrillic and regular pearls need more than a one-gun set-up to achieve the best color match and performance. Therefore, the LPH400 LVX eXtreme basecoat gun performs best with 90-95% of these basecoat colors and for the other 5-10%, the LPH400 LVB is the best solution.

The LPH400 LVX is also eXtremely proficient with waterborne coatings and gives an added advantage for waterborne basecoat application in hot dry climates.

Be sure to get with your ANEST IWATA dealer and check out the new LPH400 LVX eXtreme basecoat solution.

Want to know more? Click the PDF link below or visit Anest Iwata online or click here to view their LPH400 LVX page.

An Airbrush “How-To” from Norm Gregg - T-Shirt Artist Extraordinaire

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Last November while were attending ASET AIR AFFAIR we met a really talented T-Shirt artist by the name of Norm Gregg. Norm was kind enough to slip a disk in our hands that contained a very nicely written “How-To” article on painting a chrome-like effect on t-shirts.

And then we did some traveling and moving around and that precious disk got shuffled, tussled and ultimately lost, until now. In the process of unpacking, we’ve discovered lots of misplaced goodies from SEMA and Norm’s article was among them. Sorry it took so long to share this with you - our AirbrushTour family, but it’s worth the wait.

Click here to download your copy of “Color Chrome” by Norm Gregg.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. He’s been in the biz for about 15 years and has a full-time airbrush shop in Concord, CA. Check out some of his recent work…

Thanks to Norm for providing this article to you at AirbrushTour. Cheers, Norm!

The Bright, Exotic Finishes of Alsa

Friday, April 20th, 2007

During Dennis Matthewson’s visit to Las Vegas recently, we not only got a chance to catch up with Dennis (of Cosmic Airbrush fame), but A.D. also got an opportunity to try out some of ALSA’s 15 colors from the Hawaiian Hues collection. The result? Big fan.

Hawaiian Hues are medium solid base coats. Though designed as a basecoat they work equally well for graphic work and even airbrushing. These vibrant basecoats provide excellent coverage and fast dry times. Designed by a custom painter with the custom painter in mind. And color - Hawaiian Hues are abundant in pigment making for some intense color.

Click here to download the ALSA Unique Paints & Additives 2006 Catalog (28 pages - 8.3 MB) or visit The ALSA Corporation online to learn more about their great products.

We’re experimenting with some other Alsa products here as well. Stay tuned for more as we play and spray, and share our results with you.

Cosmic Demos from the ALSA Expert

Saturday, April 7th, 2007

We made mentioned that Dennis Mathewson would be sharing his knowledge of Alsa paints in our previous post titled Cosmic Learning with an Island Twist. His tour included several stops in Washington, Oregon and Nevada, where he passed his experience and insight to aspiring airbrush artists. We caught up with Dennis at Desert Art Supply in Las Vegas, Nevada where he played to a full house. Bob Spina, aka “Vegas”, was on hand as well, answering questions about paint and the history of old skool cool - before cool was ‘kewl’, and custom ‘kustom’.

When it comes to airbrushed tikis, Dennis is the Tiki Master with Hawaiian street cred Here he paints some of his trademark imagery.

Dennis demonstrates a variety of masking methods in his demos while demistifying paints, additives, and airbrushes.

The Iwata TH is great for background blends and solids.

Nothing beats hands-on experience with the airbrush.

Good ventilation is always important with any spray tools, including airbrushes, so large spray booths are ideal for airbrush demos.

The results of a cool dragon demo. © Dennis Mathewson / Cosmic Airbrush

Pinstriping legend Bob Spina adds some details to the Rat Fink tank, demonstrating what creativity and a few years of experience can do.

House of Kolor turns a Kewl 50

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Kudos to House of Kolor as they celebrate 50 years of quality and innovation in the automotive finishes industry. Today, many of the world’s top painters rely on HoK for their excellence in paints and product knowledge. Much of this can be credited to their founder Jon Kosmoski, who, 50 years ago put everything in place with a vision and dream that has grown to become one of the best finishes manufactures in the world. HoK products are developed for custom painters by Mr. Kosmoski himself, and he should know, since he is also a world-renown painter as well.

We caught up with Jon Kosmoski and the crew of HoK at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. SEMA and all its craziness kept him busy there with camera crews flowing through the HoK booth like paparazzi at a Hollywood wedding.

The crowd was there to check all the great color in their display, and meet the colorful artists who use make use of their finishes. Well known artists and painters Craig Fraser, Steve Vandemon, Deborah Mahan, Mike Willey, Mike Lavallee and a plethora of others were on hand signing calendars and posters, and showing some of their latest work. We’re going to bring you all of it over the next few posts. There is simply far too much to cover in one shot here. We’re talking about a Hamsters custom motorcycles, race cars, guitars, artist panels, and artists pics. I’m sure I missed something here, but no matter, you’ll get all here soon.

Mr. Kosmoski takes pause and give us a hearty thumbs up the first day of SEMA. (pictured above: A.D. Cook and Jon Kosmoski)

Shutterbugs everywhere. The HoK display, with all its color and art proudly showcased, had more than its share of cameras. We were no exception.

Like airbrushed panels? We do. Watch for panels like these, and more in an upcoming post on AirbrushTour. In the meantime, you can download their catalog here — it’s packed full of product info along with some kewl HoK history — see what makes these guys tick and why we expect them to be here another 50 years.
