I recently traveled to Barcelona Spain where I had a one-day invitation only event at the facility of Anest-Iwata Iberica S.L.U. on Saturday May 17th. A total of over 20 local Iwata equipment retailers and distributors and their selected guest artists attended an 8 hour demonstration using all the cool new stuff Iwata has to offer. Plus I shared some of my tricks of the trade and carried my Tiki mania yet to another location in the world. Only thing is they already knew all about it from my last trip to Europe last year. (TrackBack to that post here)
My island style has truly been accepted worldwide and nothing could make me happier. I also carried with some classic skulls and fire demonstrations but MAN they really go for the Tiki stuff.
Not only was the local talent in Spain top notch but the city of Barcelona was amazing as well. The architecture and history is breath taking as for the food I was some of the best in the world. I could spend much more time there but as usual I must move on. The Anest Iwata folks were more than accommodating showing me some sites and setting up a world-class training atmosphere for a day.
The Spanish Tiki.
My Europe travel companion was Alberto Ferrero of Anest Iwata Europe. He was very helpful making sure everything goes as planned. Also attending was Iwata Japan’s top man Satoru Iwata himself.
Special thanks go to Cesare, Juan, Patrizia & Manuel for running the show and David Naylor a local Barcelona top class airbrush artist for dropping by at the end and presenting me a piece of his incredible artwork. Stay tuned as I travel more through Europe spreading the Tiki and airbrush fever.
Just a reminder to those of you who want to become airbrush masters. If you haven’t already signed up for the Air Affair East in Williamsport, PA, you’ll want to get right on that - it’s fast approaching. Here are the details.

This is a followup to last week’s post from Dennis Mathewson of Cosmic Airbrush. He was recently in Yokohama, Japan conducting a workshop, hosted by AIWA and Iwata. AIWA is a Japanese paint and body-shop supplier and they sell many different lines of paint and equipment including PPG, House of Kolor, Standox, RM and many others.
Akiyama-san, owner of AIWA, and Satoru Iwata - hosts at the workshop.
Here are statues of the two Iwata brothers that started the company 100 years ago.
Ikeda-san is the main man when it comes to airbrush - he is #2 in the airbrush empire of Iwata in Japan and always a big help and a friend at Dennis’ workshops, as well as personally while he’s in Yokohama.
Following are pictures of a number of students working on their projects. Lots of Artool template action that weekend.
Tiki time. Last year’s project was fire, this year was Tiki.
Norio was Dennis’ interpreter for the weekend and did a GREAT job. He is also a good friend of Akiyama-san and very willing to help.
This is the 10 minute demo project teaching speed.
Learning to make their own templates was taught as well.
Class study day one. Everybody painted this one.
Class study day two. Everybody painted this one as well.

Next, Dennis will be teaching workshops in Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. May 15-25 he’s in Europe for Iwata and ALSA. He won’t be doing any U.S. workshops this year at all, things are really picking up in the custom paint world in Europe.
Class Times:
• One-day Classes: 9am to 5pm (classes tend to run later)
• Four-Day Classes: Days 1, 2, 3: 9am to 5pm (classes tend to run later); Day 4: Noon approximately.
The Vegas Getaway is held at the Southpoint Hotel and Casino.
Introducing Brian & Leah Gall own & operate Finishline Design Inc. in Corcoran, MN, just 30 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Leah handles the airbrush and Brian is skilled in body work and graphic style paint jobs. Check out some of their work…
Sept 15, 2007, I had a One Day Workshop in Gotenburg, Sweden at the Anest-Iwata facility Host Iwata Scandinavia promoted a great turn-out event with some of the best talent I ever held any one-day workshop. Aberto Ferrero, Satoru Iwata, Christian Bertolini and me, left Italy to Sweden for this one day event. Here are some of the pix from that day. Thanks to the entire staff of Iwata Scandanavia for setting up a terrific facility stage for this event.

First I start out warming everybody up with some drills and showing them the new Iwata Kustom line of airbrushes.
Note I even used my own hand carved TIKI handle I made for myself and my trusted CH Kustom. Once I see just how skilled this group is I skipped all the basics and moved on to more advanced stuff for them.
We jumped right into a skull stencil pattern I drew up and let each give it their own flair. WOW! This group was awesome and we really moved through most this stuff fast.
Linda Tolind even trained in for the day and man can she kick ass with that TR-1 pistol handled airbrush. Each artist gave the skull their own twist…Very Cool!
Everybody really came up with great stuff that day. They all started out on Medea water based colors then we moved on to ALSA colors and and tried lots of cool F/X.
David Gunnarsson Known for his Fantastic hockey helmet work even gave the TR-1 a good show. They all really like that airbrush, and MAN, they can really make it work for them.
Robert Forsgren came all the way in by train also WOW! These guys really had me showing stuff I normally never do in a one day workshop here Robert gave the skull a wood TIKI look how’s that? Awesome!
Every hour I pulled everybody forward and got more and more detailed into this design. They also loved my one hour slide presentation I had with me from the current Air Affair in SLC they got to see the who’s who and see what they are painting even today. Just like they were there.
We painted right up till the final hour of the class intensely WOW!
Then it was time to bust into some of my CLASSIC Hawaiian style artwork and give them some ideas on how I paint and even a TIKI history lesson that all really enjoyed.
Finally I busted out all my own Artool Tiki Master templates and gave demos and let all play with the products to check them out and
get a quite demo to see how to use them. That pretty much wrapped up the day of fun.
Thanks to all and a few had to leave before the final pix to catch their trains back home all over sweden. Linda and Christian hung around with me one more day for a private tiki painting session that really topped off my trip and allowed me to leave behind a little Island Culture for them to remember me by.

Day 4 featured the inaugural Ultimate Air Affair Car and Motorcycle Show. The classes ended on day 3, which enabled the instructors to finish the projects they started earlier in the program or had yet to start. A 2008 van was donated by Chrysler for the Ultimate Air Affair and had a film strip graphic design painted on its’ sides and tailgate compliments of Dean Loucks and Kindig (ASET’s painter). The filmstrip had numerous individual cells that were airbrushed with classic movie scenes by the instructors. Many of the instructors had to wait for day 4 to paint the cells on the van. While the artists airbrushed inside, there was a world class car and cycle show going on outside. ASET had the road closed to traffic and filled the boulevard and adjacent parking lots with custom vehicles. Many of the students from the 3 day workshop, stayed for day 4. The van was moved into the “VooDoo Swing Lounge” so the artists could work their magic while the attendees watched and asked questions. The day ended with all of the instructors having airbrushed their classic images onto the van which would eventually end up being displayed in Chrysler corporations’ 2007 SEMA show booth at Las Vegas.
All in all it was a great show and a win-win situation for both the artists and the students. The positive energy flowed in both directions with both sides benefiting from the good karma of the other. The good folks at ASET really know how to put on a first class event that reflects the quality of the people involved in the preparation and implementation of the 2007 Ultimate Air Affair.
