Ed Hubbs on Pimp My Ride

PIMP MY RIDE - ‘72 Custom Hearse by Ed Hubbs.
When I arrived at the set of Pimp My Ride in Sun Valley, California the Cadillac Hearse had already been painted black with purple pearl. All the artists met at the shop, some of us meeting for the first time.
Rich Evans, owner of Huntington Beach Bodyworks, had contacted all of us and made all of the arrangements about what was to be painted on this tricked out Hearse. From that point, ‘Kiwi’ Terry Stephens took over and started laying out the design for us seven artists to follow.

Terry started out by using stencils that he helped design (you can purchase these same stencils from www.kustomshop.com) and laying them in an overlapping pattern spraying black base through the stencil on top of spray mask that had been previously laid out.
Then we all started cutting out the out side patterns, leaving the middle exposed. The next step was to decide on the colors to be used. We all agreed on natural bone color, so Danny Albert and I went to work on making the colors. We used all Kustom Shop paints to airbrush with. Every one was in agreement about how user friendly the paint was and how well it flowed through our Iwata HP-C airbrushes.
After making the colors, I sprayed two coats of the tinted white base down. Now the fun begins! Terry started out airbrushing the first of the 150 skulls. He established a standard of what all the rest of the skulls were to resemble in color tones. Once Terry finished the first skull, we were all excited to get started. So the airbrush marathon began. We all picked a different spot on the car to start. After finishing on one, we would trade places and start again.

This process went on into the late hours of the night. After a couple hours of sleep and a full belly, we were back at it first thing in the morning. A couple of the artist could not make it back in the morning because of prior obligations. I airbrushed until about 2:00 p.m. that afternoon. Then my nephew Chyenne and I had a thirteen hour drive back to Oregon. Terry and a couple others stayed and finished up.
Just to airbrush beside these talented artist was an honor. Airbushing for Pimp My Ride and MTV was so fun and such an incredible experience. I would like to personally thank Rich Evans, Iwata, Kustom Shop and every one involved with Pimp My Ride. And yes, meeting XZIBIT and the guys at Galpin Auto Sports was cooooool!

The artist names from left to right; Carlos Avelar – Gene Turner – Johnny Soteh - Danny Albert – Terry Stephens – Ed Hubbs – Chyenne Hubbs and laying down in the front is Greg. I had a lot of fun. What a good bunch of guys.
