Mike Lavallee’s Monster Bash ‘09

The ever-gracious Mike Lavallee and company hosted the 2009 Monster Bash this last week in Snohomish Washington. Mike who is well known in the airbrush and pin striping circles is the owner, and one of the several artists, at Killer Paint. He is also known for the True Fire style of flames as well as high end automotive graphics. This year’s event boasted artists from around the country.
The event was an interesting conjunction of disciplines. The airbrush, sign painting, hand lettering and pin striping people were there. This made a very interesting exchange of ideas about how to integrate different styles and ideas. Among the attendees was Jose San Juan from the Seattle area. He brought in a finished skateboard deck and a project deck for the Voodoo theme of the show. Doing a self-portrait in the small was quite a treat to watch. John Frankel brought in a sketch of Marty Feldman that turned out great.
I think the two stars of the show were Josh McCurdy from Spokane and Darren Wensel from Australia via Virginia. Josh did a spectacular piece derived from a distorted photo that turned into a real exercise in imagination. Darrin wowed the crowd with a Tiki and Skulls rendition of a sunset with all the little goodies thrown in. He then proceeded to crank out superb pin striping pieces like he was being paid by the page.
Don King showed up for the pin striping crowd and turned out some of his usual magic. And there were too many other people to mention that did some brilliant stuff.
Thanks to all.
Kirk
PS Lavallee’s bathroom really does have the HOT SEAT.
